At night
Can you visit Yasaka Shrine at night?
Yes. The grounds never close, there is no fee, and the Dance Hall lanterns are lit every night.
Three things change after dark: the bell rope is tied up from about 17:00, the shrine office closes at 17:00, and the crowds thin out. On most days it is 40 or lower out of 100 from about 19:00–21:00.
What is open after dark?
| Grounds | Open all night, free |

| Praying at the Main Hall | Yes, any time. The bell rope is tied up from about 17:00 to about 6:00, so you pray without ringing it. |
| Shrine office (amulets, goshuin) | Closes at 17:00. Opens again at 9:00. |
| Goshuin in your book | Until 16:00 (¥500). From then until 17:00, paper slips only. |

What will you see at night?
- 1The Dance Hall (Maidono) lanterns. Rows of paper lanterns given by teahouses of the geisha districts and restaurants nearby, lit every night. The hall stands in the middle of the grounds, in front of the Main Hall.
- 2About 100 stone lanterns. Given mostly by shops around Gion and lit at night. The shrine's own photo of them is taken on the north approach.
- 3The West Gate (Nishi-romon) from Shijo-dori. The vermilion gate at the end of Shijo-dori, rebuilt in 1497, is the oldest building in the grounds.

The shrine doesn't publish a time, only that the Dance Hall lanterns are lit every night. It doesn't publish anything about food stalls at night either, so we don't say.
